Plains game Safaris

South Africa

South Africa is a truly wonderful country to visit and hunt in. Its topography is so diverse that a wide variety of species are found here. It is therefore imperative that you plan your safari carefully and allocate enough time to be able to hunt all your trophies, successfully avoiding disappointment.

Garry Kelly Safaris tailors all their safaris to the client’s specific requirements. Please peruse our species list which is found on the Contact Us page for full details. It is important to keep in mind that we operate in most of South Africa’s provinces and can arrange a safari for you in any of these areas. One of Garry Kelly Safaris, Professional Hunters will accompany you to all the areas that we hunt, at all times. All our accommodation is very comfortable and your every need will be catered for, ensuring your comfort and safety at all times. The food is of the highest standard. Many clients are concerned about the gun import requirements in South Africa. We make use of Air 2000 and Travel with Guns who are companies that specifically organise all your documentation and will meet you at the airport to clear you through customs. None of our clients have had any problems clearing customs with their guns while using this service. Please contact us for more information.

We hunt in the following provinces of South Africa:

Limpopo, South Africa

We hunt on excellent concessions in Limpopo. The camps are approximately a three and a half hour drive north of Johannesburg. Most of the areas in Limpopo that we hunt are very mountainous with scattered open plains  within these mountains. Many of the common plains game animals can be found in these areas but the main attractions are: big Kudu, Southern Impala, Warthog, Klipspringer, Waterbuck and we have limited permits for Roan and Sable. Buffalo  permits are becoming more plentiful – for those interested in hunting a buffalo, this is a very exciting hunt. Please contact us early so we can make sure to get a permit. The accommodation varies from very comfortable permanent structures to tented camps.

Eastern Cape, South Africa

This area is situated between Port Elizabeth and East London and stretches inland for 250km. It consists of coastal forests where the elusive Blue Duiker and Cape Grysbok are found, arid plains and mountain ranges where you will find a wide range of species available, like the 4 different Springbuck, 3 different Blesbok and Black Wildebeest, mountain reedbuck, vaal Rhebok, klipspringer just to mention a few.

The Bontebok, which is unique to the Cape, can also be taken with special permits. In the valleys and cliffs closer to the mountains, you might be lucky enough to find a Cape Bushbuck, sunning itself in the morning or late afternoon, or a Cape Kudu. The accommodations in the Eastern Cape range from old colonial homesteads to small intimate hunting camps, which are all very comfortable.

KwaZulu Natal, South Africa

Zululand

This old hunting ground of past Zulu Kings produces exceptional Nyala and is home to the little Red Duiker and Suni. Another main attraction is hunting free-range White Rhino in the Mkuze controlled hunting area which is within the Mkuze Game Reserve. This area is also renowned for its world class Nyala trophies. It is a 3-hour drive north of Durban along spectacular coastline or a 7-hour drive from Johannesburg. Please check arrival times in these cities, as we do not recommend driving at night on the smaller roads and recommend an overnight stay with an early departure the next morning.

The Midlands

One hour’s drive north of Durban or a 5-hour drive south east of Johannesburg, the Midlands is reminiscent of the quiet English countryside. This area is great for the Cape Bushbuck, found on the edges of thick natural forests, or the Common and Mountain Reedbuck, found more on the grassy slopes of low lying mountains. Numerous of the other common species such as greater kudu, zebra, wildebeest, Blesbok, hartebeest, gemsbok and eland are all available in the area. The accommodations vary depending on where you hunt, from 5-star lodges to old colonial homesteads to intimate hunting cabins  and small log cabins. Click here for more info.
